PRINCE GEORGE — Carson Carels scored the teddy bear goal as the Prince George Cougars made it rain bears and goals in a 6-3 win over the Kamloops Blazers Saturday (Dec. 7) night.

The rookie defenceman’s third of the season made it a 2-1 game at CN Centre after the Blazers struck twice in the opening eight minutes of the game.

Both Emmitt Finnie in the opening minute and Jordan Keller scored for Kamloops before Carels’ one-timer past Logan Edmonstone at 15:28 of the opening period triggered an avalanche of stuffies from the sellout crowd on Teddy Bear and Toque Toss Night.

Aiden Foster then tied things up at 2-2 at 13:56 of the second period, though Keller restored the Blazers lead less than a minute later with his second power play goal of the night – a tap in past Joshua Ravensbergen in the Cougars net.

From there, it was all Cougars, who scored four unanswered courtesy Koehn Ziemmer, Riley Heidt, and a pair from Hunter Laing, who was playing his 100th career WHL game.

Laing and Ziemmer finished with three point nights as the Cougars beat their BC Division rival for the third time this season. They also took over second in the Western Conference with a 15-8-3-2 record, after the Victoria Royals were beaten 4-2 by Kelowna last night.

Ravensbergen, who starred in Friday’s win over Regina, picked up the win for the Cougars with a 25 save effort on 28 shots. Logan Edmonstone was much busier in the Blazers net as he turned aside 39 of 45 shots in a losing effort.

The Cougars will play the next seven games on the road, starting with a Wednesday (Dec. 11) night encounter against the Tri-City Americans.

Their next home game is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 3 against the Seattle Thunderbirds.
