SPOKANE, WASH. — Riley Heidt scored in his first game back after he was left off Team Canada’s roster for the World Juniors to help the Prince George Cougars to a 3-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs Saturday (Dec. 14).

The 19-year-old Heidt – who was named first star on the night – needed less than nine minutes to open the scoring at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena.

Second period goals from Koehn Ziemmer and Borya Valis gave the Cougars a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of hockey. Valis added an assist and picked up the third star honours.

Cougars goaltender Cooper Michaluk was seconds away from a shutout, which was foiled when Brayden Crampton scored a consolation for the Chiefs at 19:31 of the third period.

Michaluk, who started ahead of Joshua Ravensbergen, was named second star, after he finished with 33 saves on 34 shots. Dawson Cowan picked up the loss for Spokane after he allowed three goals on 38 shots.

The win takes the Cougars to 17-9-3-2 on the season, which has them in second place in the Western Conference with 39 points from 31 games.

They’ll play one more game before the WHL holiday break – in Kelowna against the Rockets on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
