PRINCE GEORGE— The B.C. SPCA in Prince George and the Prince George Humane Society will be seeing some big changes in the New year. The Humane Society will now be taking over the Animal Shelter building for the City. The B.C. SPCA, on the other hand, will be moving to a community service model until they find a new location to receive animals.

“That would be supporting things like our pet food bank and making sure that pets have access to to food,” explains Jamey Blair, Senior Manager for the North and Kootenay regions of the SPCA. “We still will be operating our animal protection services the same as we always have been.”

The Prince George Spay and Neuter Clinic will also continue to be operated by the SPCA.

Since the beginning of 2024 to November, a combined 700 animals were adopted out to Prince George residents. While the organizations have been finding homes for our furry friends, both say there are still plenty to adopt.

“Dogs, in particular large breed dogs, it’s really hard to find them homes right now,” says Kelsey MacNeil of the PG Humane Society. “Part of that is just that our pet population has really gotten a bit out of control in the last few years as we struggled with, you know, finding appropriate veterinary access and for spay and neuter.”

If you want to help these organizations to have a successful 2025, both the SPCA and the PG Humane Society are always in need of donations. You can also volunteer either by fostering pets or helping with general operations.
