QUESNEL — The BC SPCA says it has seen an outpouring of love and concern in the wake of the seizure of 59 dogs and 14 birds from an irresponsible breeder in Quesnel.

In a post on Facebook, it says each of the animals will be cared for at their own pace, based on their needs and the severity of their condition when they were found earlier this month.

In all, the SPCA says it seized 12 chihuahuas, four French bulldogs and 43 Cane Corsos. It also said 18 of the Cane Corsos were born within the last month.

“The outpouring of love from you and others in this compassionate community has been truly inspiring,” the SPCA said. “Thanks to your kindness, as they arrived every dog, puppy and bird from this Animal Protection case was examined and a personalized treatment plan was put in place to address their individual medical concerns.”

“All of the group with weight concerns have been carefully assessed and put on a refeeding plan to help them gain weight while staying healthy. Our biggest concern is overwhelming their weak bodies, so the key is increasing their daily calories slowly.”

The SCPA says while some of the young puppies that were seized are currently available for adoption, it isn’t 100 per cent sure when the rest of the group will be ready.

“One of the young litters is already growing up so quickly,” the post added. “These eight babies are three-weeks-old now and are starting to see the world through their wee eyes. They’re mostly just adorable wrinkles at this point, but we know things will change quickly and they’ll soon be rambunctious little things running around causing chaos.”

“Two other four-month-old pups from this group are currently awaiting their new homes too.”

At the time of the seizure, the BC SPCA said it will be recommending charges against the breeder.
