PRINCE GEORGE — A new partnership between the Prince George Humane Society and the City of Prince George goes into effect on January 1, 2025.

A five-year contract has been signed by both parties with the option of a three-year renewal. It means the Humane Society will deliver animal shelter operations for the City.

The Humane Society will take over the building previously used by the BC SPCA at 4011 Landsdowne Road. They will also be keeping their existing location on First Avenue.

“We are excited to have been selected to deliver this vital service for Prince George,” says Prince George Humane Society President Angela McLaren. “We look forward to building on the strong foundation of animal care established in the community. The feedback we have received so far in the community has been extremely positive.”

The Lansdowne Road building will be the community animal shelter that will handle stray animal intake, redemptions, and adoption services for both cats and dogs. The First Avenue building will be the cat adoption and humane education centre.

The SPCA will continue to work with the City’s Bylaw Department to handle animal cruelty investigations, ensuring ongoing collaboration to support animal welfare in Prince George.

Key points for the public to note:

  • Animal shelter services will remain consistent during and after the transition.
  • The City and the Prince George Humane Society are committed to providing exceptional care and services for all animals.
  • Report lost pets to City’s Animal control team at 250-561-7622. However please report found pets to the Humane Society on 250-640-7415. Stolen pets should be reported to the RCMP.
