VICTORIA — Joshua Ravensbergen continues to solidify his claim as a potential first round NHL draft pick, as he led the Prince George Cougars to a weekend sweep of the Victoria Royals Saturday (Dec. 28) night.

The 18-year-old Vancouver native made 37 saves on 38 shots, 19 of which came in the opening period alone, as the Cougars picked up another 2-1 win on the Island to begin the second half of the WHL season.

Treydon Trembecky opened the scoring for the Royals in the first period, as Victoria looked to bounce back after Friday’s shootout loss. They peppered Ravensbergen’s net, but were unable to solve him a second time.

Hunter Laing’s tenth of the season at 5:45 of the middle frame tied things up, after a lengthy review. Laing powered in on a breakaway at the end of a power play and shoved the puck pas Jayden Krauss to make it 1-1.

Four minutes later, Aiden Foster scored what turned out to be the game winner in his 100th WHL game.

Cougars rookie Carson Carels had primary assists on both goals and was named third star on the night. Ravensbergen was named first star, as he picked up his 18th win of the season.

Kraus turned aside 25 of 27 shots in a losing effort for the Royals, who drop to 34-17-3-3 and sit in six place in the conference, five points behind the Cougars in the BC Division standings.

The Cougars improve to 20-9-3-2 and remain in second in the Western Conference.

The Cougars will play one more game on the road – against the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday – before returning home to face the Thunderbirds on Friday night, Jan. 3, 2025.
