PRINCE GEORGE – The popular ride-sharing app Uber is planning an expansion across the province, which includes Prince George.

“In May 2023, Uber received approval from the provincial government’s Passenger Transportation Board for a license transfer from another ride-share company. And that transfer of that license allows Uber to operate across the province,” explained Keerthana Rang, a spokesperson with Uber.

Uber first launched in B.C. in Vancouver, 2020, and has expanded into Victoria and Kelowna in June 2023 following the provincial government’s approval. Now, it is looking to get into markets across the province, with Prince George being one of several.

“British Columbians and visitors alike are constantly opening the app to try and find a ride, just like they can in most cities across the country, and we’ve seen that in Prince George as well. We think it’s time that residents across the province and Prince George have that same access to ride share as they do in Vancouver, Victoria and Kelowna to help them get where they need to go when they need to,” Rang said.

While Prince George already has other services like Uride and taxis, Rang believes the market is still there for Uber. She cites Prince George’s population of approximately 80,000, as well as that many visitors may look to Uber first when visiting. A successful launch in Prince George would require drivers, and Rang believes the interest is there.

“We’re confident we can find the right amount of drivers for Prince George. The more drivers we have on the platform, it means the experience is better for riders and drivers. There’s more people accepting trips for riders, wait times would go down, and drivers have more trips so that they can earn more money,” she said.

Rang added Uber is adding an incentive of an extra $500 for drivers who sign up and complete ten rides to try and get a strong start. At the moment there is no specific launch day, but Uber says its planning to launch in early 2025, dependent on how many drivers it can get.
