Second carjacking in 5-month span raises concern for Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE – The armed carjacking that took place at the Prince George Airport on Christmas Day at around 11:00 p.m. has raised concern for both the RCMP and the airport. This is the second carjacking at the airport in 2024, and the second in a five month window, and the relatively short time between the incidents has certainly raised eyebrows.

“We understand the public’s concerns, especially as this marks the second incident of this nature in 2024. Please rest assured that the safety and security of our passengers, employees, and visitors remain our highest priority. We are committed to working closely with the authorities to address this matter and to continually strengthen our safety measures,” a statement from the Prince George Airport Authority said.

While definitely worth monitoring and addressing, the RCMP believe this is not the start of a trend, as it’s believed to be unlikely that more carjacking should be expected to occur due to these two incidents.

“Carjackings in themselves are incredibly rare occurrences in Prince George. To have had two in just such a short time span, both in and around the airport, is very rare. We don’t want to make the general public nervous that this might be a regular occurrence. This is very surprising for us as well,” said Prince George RCMP Corporal Jennifer Cooper.

The airport is working with RCMP to try and catch the suspect, which includes providing CCTV footage to authorities, but for now very little is known. Outside of knowing that the suspect is a man wearing all black at the time, there is not much to go off of, so any additional information could be quite helpful.

“We’re looking for anybody who may have been at the airport at that time and maybe got dash camera footage of the suspect, the taxi cab coming or going. Even though it was late at night on Christmas Day, the airport was still very busy, anyone who may have seen the incident and hasn’t come forward to police yet with what they saw, we’d love to speak to them,” Cooper said.
