PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George is attempting to clear up some misconceptions about the new Civic Core District Plan.

“You may have seen or read a number of differing things about the City’s Civic Core District Plan, so let’s clarify exactly what has happened to far, and what comes next,” a statement from the City of Prince George said.

In December, City Council voted in favour of a plan presented by staff that includes mixed-use residential developments, a new hotel, a performing arts centre, and a new arena. Staff say none of the details including on the size and scope of each building or parking options, have been determined at this stage.

In the statement, the City says more specific details – including economic analysis, timelines, and financial information – are expected to come forward later this year.

“The Civic Core District Plan is a long-term, phased initiative aimed at enhancing the vibrancy of downtown Prince George, strengthening the local economy, and providing amenities to improve the quality of life for all residents,” the statement said.

“Community input remains a cornerstone of this project, and the City encourages residents to stay engaged as we move forward.”

Staff also say they’ve spent about $55,000 on the project so far, dating back to 2023 where there was “extensive public engagement” done with key user groups and through an online survey.

On December 18, 2023, Council directed Administration to procure consultant services to prepare conceptual options and site designs for the Civic Core District Plan area, incorporating community consultation results and previously identified priorities, including arts, culture, and arena uses,” the statement said.

“On December 16, 2024, based on the public feedback, staff prepared two conceptual plan options to present to Council.”

A third proposal developed by Mayor Simon Yu that included things like a new plaza above Patricia Boulevard, a rapid transit line, a new amphitheatre, and a new orchestra hall or IMAX theatre, was also presented, but voted down by council.

Staff say they will proceed with technical studies (including parking) and site planning over the next few months to “ensure the City is well-positioned for future development opportunities.”
