PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars rode a three goal third period en route to a 3-2 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday (Jan. 24) night at the CN Centre.

The Cats got back into the win column after a four consecutive losses on the road that saw them fall out of top spot in the B.C. Division.

Trialing 1-0 after 40 minutes following a second period goal from the Wheat Kings’ Jaxon Jacobson, the Cougars stuck through Ben Riche, who made it a 1-1 game at 3:23 of the third with a power play marker from the point.

Brandon retook the lead less than a minute later through Carter Klippenstein, before the Cats fought back once again. Aiden Foster tied things up at 2-2 at 5:44 of the period with a tap in.

Koehn Ziemmer then scored what was the game winner at 7:53 of the third period, also on the power play, as the 25-14-4-2 Cougars moved to 55 points from 44 games, two behind the Victoria Royals who have played one more game.

The 20-year-old Ziemmer is now just five goals away from becoming the Cougars all-time goal scoring leader. With 116 goals to his name, the LA Kings prospect trails Prince Geoge native Chase Witala, who scored 120 as a Cougar between 2011 and 2016.

Joshua Ravensbergen was excellent once again as he made 29 saves on 31 shots for his 21st win of the season. Brandon’s Carson Bjarnason made 21 saves on 24 shots to pick up the loss.

Next up for the Cats is a home game against the Kamloops Blazers Saturday night, Jan. 25. It’s the second game of the Cougars’ Indigenous Weekend celebration, with puck drop from the CN Centre set for 6:00 p.m.
