PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars gave up four unanswered goals in the second period as the Kamloops Blazers came away with a 5-2 win at the CN Centre Saturday (Jan. 25) night.

Led by former Cougar Oren Shtrom’s three point night, the Blazers chased Joshua Ravensbergen from the crease after he allowed three goals on 14 shots in 27:03 of action.

Koehn Ziemmer opened the scoring on a breakaway 88 seconds into the game, a lead the Cougars held on to until Beau Courtney struck shorthanded at the 46-second mark of the second period.

The Blazers then opened the floodgates as goals from Nathan Behm and Shtrom’s first of the night ended Ravensbergen’s night. Cooper Michaluk wasn’t able to stem the tide as Tommy Lafreniere made it a 4-1 game about five minutes later.

A Borya Valis shorthanded goal at 16:32 of the second gave the Cougars a bit of life, as he made it a 4-2 game. But any hopes of a comeback were effectively snuffed out less than five minutes into the third when Shtrom struck on the power play for his second of the night.

Dylan Ernst made 30 saves on 32 shots to pick up the win for the Blazers, as they improved to 17-24-3-0. Michauk allowed seven of nine in 32:57 of relief work for Prince George, as they dropped to 25-15-3-2, which has them fifth in the Western Conference.

Ziemmer’s goal was his 117th for the Cougars as he inches closer to the Chase Witala’s all-time record of 120.

Next up for the Cougars is a Tuesday night, Jan. 28, game against the Swift Current Broncos. Puck drop from the CN Centre is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
