PRINCE GEORGE — Update: FortisBC crews have completed emergency repairs to its gas system.

The road closure on 15th Avenue between Freeman Street and Ewert is expected to fully reopen by 1 p.m. Friday (Jan.31).

“We appreciate the public’s patience while we made these repairs safely and as quickly as possible,” said FortisBC in a statement provided to CKPG News.

Earlier:: FortisBC has issued some information regarding the gas leak at 15th Avenue and Freeman Street.

They say they learned earlier Friday (Jan.31) morning of a potential gas leak on their system and say their crews are on site and making repairs.

FortisBC determined the source of the odour to be an underground gas main at the site with crews working to determine the best way to excavate to expose the line so they can begin repairs.

They do not have a time as to when gas will be under control or when repairs will be complete.

FortisBC reminds everyone that if you smell rotten eggs or hear the sound of escaping gas, to stop what you’re doing, go outside and dial 9-1-1 or call FortisBC’s 24 hour emergency line at 1-800-663-9911.

Earlier: Avoid 15th Avenue from Freeman Street to Ewert Street.

FortisBC, BC Hydro, City of Prince George maintenance staff and Prince George Fire Rescue are all on scene investigating a “strong odour in the air.” The investigation has closed the area to determine the source of the odour.

Fire Chief Cliff Warner says homes in the area are being monitored. We’ll provide more updates as soon as more information becomes available.
