New program makes swimming more accessible for people with sensory sensitivities

PRINCE GEORGE – Swimming is an important life skill, but public pools can feel overwhelming for some people. Recently, the City of Prince George started a program that allows those with autism, anxiety, and sensory processing challenges to enjoy the pool in a calmer environment with less noise.

“There’s a lot of water splashing, kids having fun. You might have loud music for an aquatic class or just a normal public swim. And it creates an excitable atmosphere. And for some people, that’s really awesome and really fun. And for others, that can be a little bit, you know, offputting.”

Every afternoon during the week, staff create a supportive environment for those overwhelmed by noise.

The sensory swim program started five months ago and is growing in popularity among individuals with sensory sensitivities.

“Many people can benefit from a sensory inclusive environment because it’s not even just people who are diagnosed as autistic. People with anxiety can benefit. ADHD can also benefit.”

Sensory-friendly swim times at the Canfor Leisure Pool are available for people of all ages from Monday to Friday between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.
