Northern Capitals making big strides this season

PRINCE GEORGE— The Northern Capitals returned back to Prince George this week after competing in the Female World Sport School Challenge in Winnipeg. Despite winning just one of their four games, they showed their class, competing with some of the best programs in the country.

“We played RHA Winnipeg as well as the Winnipeg Ice in games one and three and came very close to beating both those teams. Those teams ended up in the final, so the margins are very close. We fell short this time, but we’re competing with the best teams across the province,” said Capitals Head Coach, Hayden-James Berra.

The club has made some major strides this season, already improving their win total by two over last season with eight regular season games remaining.

“This year our team’s just so hard working, always up to face adversity and challenges that are in our way. They (the team) have a really positive outlook, pushing through everything and I think that really impacts our team,” said Capitals forward, Neen Suapa, on why the team’s made some big improvements this season.

As the program has made some major strides so has women’s hockey as whole, creating future opportunities that seemed out of reach just a couple years ago.

“Pro wasn’t even an option when I first came to the capitals and now it’s on TV all the time. I think that’s super amazing and something to strive for myself or for younger players coming through. It’s super huge,” said Capitals defenseman, Staysha Heibert, on the growth of the women’s game through her four years with the club.

The Northern Capitals currently sit second in the BCEHL U18 FAAA standings with three weeks to go in the season, as they head to Burnaby this weekend for four very important match-ups in the Spring Showcase.
