KELOWNA — Riley Heidt wrote his name into the record books as the Prince George Cougars beat the Kelowna Rockets 3-2 Friday (Feb. 7) night after defeat Tuesday in Kennewick.

With his 236th career assist, the Cougars captain surpassed Mark Morrison’s long-standing franchise record of 235 assists dating back to the Cougars time in Victoria.

Heidt, who is already the franchise’s all-time leader in points with 345 and counting, is currently fourth in goals at 109 behind Chase Witala (120), teammate Koehn Ziemmer (119), and Eric Hunter (111).

The Rockets struck first at Prospera Place through Levi Benson after a miscue at neutral ice saw two Cougars collide. Borya Valis though ensured parity at about eight minutes later to make it a 1-1 game.

Heidt broke Morrison’s record with a secondary assist on Terik Parascak’s go-ahead goal at 6:17 of the second period. The Cougars captain then scored the game-winner about five minutes later as the Cats took a 3-1 lead into the dressing room after 40 minutes of hockey.

Kelowna pushed back in the third and cut the deficit to one courtesy Dawson Gerwing at 9:35, but there was no comeback to had as Joshua Ravensbergen stood tall to ensure the Cougars marked Heidt’s big night with a win.

Ravensbergen finished with 31 saves on 33 shots while Jake Pilon picked up the loss for Kelowna with a 26 save effort.

The 29-15-4-3 Cougars trail the 30-14-3-5 Victoria Royals for the BC Division lead.

The Cougars will conclude their three-game road trip in Kamloops Saturday (Feb. 8) night against the Blazers at 6:00 p.m. The Blazers have won the last two meetings against the Cougars.
