Spruce Kings win both games against Coquitlam to keep BCHL playoff hopes alive

PRINCE GEORGE — Kazumo Sasaki was the hero once again as the Prince George Spruce Kings continue to make a push for a BCHL playoff berth.

Sasaki scored twice as the Kings beat the Coquitlam 3-2 Saturday (Feb. 8) night, their second consecutive win against the Express this weekend.. The native of Nishitokyo, Japan was the overtime hero in the Kings 3-2 win on Friday.

Like they did on Friday night, the Express struck first at Kopar Memorial Arena Saturday, but the Kings found a way to score three goals unanswered once again.

Nick Metelkin equalized on the power play midway through the second period before Sasaki scored at 17:44 to make it a 2-1 game for Prince George. Sasaki scored his second at 4:06 of the third, to ensure that Mason Kesselring’s late goal amounted to nothing.

Goaltender Charles-Edward Gravel made a huge glove save in the final minute to help the Kings kill off the rest of the game at Kopar Memorial Arena. He finished with 32 saves for his second BCHL win in as many days.

Logan Kennedy picked up the loss for the Express, as he allowed three goals on 31 shots.

With 34 points from 39 games, the Spruce Kings are currently seven points out of the eight and final spot with 15 games left to play. They trail Langley (41 points) and Nanaimo (42) who sit eighth and seventh respectively.

They’ll make their final Island road trip of the season this coming weekend, when the face off against Cowichan Valley on Friday (Feb. 14) and Nanaimo on Saturday.
