LeDrew and Sasaki help Spruce Kings in push for playoff spot

PRINCE GEORGE— The Spruce Kings are coming off two massive wins this weekend over the Coquitlam Express. They trailed in both games but showed their resilience, ending the weekend with all four points.

Kazumo Sasaki led the way for the Kings, scoring three goals, including both game winners and the overtime tally on Friday (Feb. 7).

“I just try to play a game and I’m trying to do my best to help my team out…Whatever it takes, I’m just trying to do my part,” said Sasaki.

While Sasaki leads the team with 15 goals on the season, defenseman Trent LeDrew scored his first for the Kings in the weekend opener, to set up overtime.

“It’s great to get a first one in front of the PG crowd here. I know my family was really happy for me and that goal was a big for the team, which is the most important thing,” said LeDrew.

LeDrew and Sasaki’s contributions led the Spruce Kings to four very important points as they chase down the Coastal Conference’s eighth and final playoff spot. With 15 games remaining in the season, Prince George are currently seven points back of that final spot with two games in hand.

“We’re at the point of season where we’re looking to catch teams and we don’t want to take a weekend off, especially in our division. It feels like if you’re not getting three or four points, you’re falling behind. We got to go on the road this weekend on a mission to take as many points as we can and start to close the gap,” said Spruce Kings Head Coach, Brad Tesink.

The Kings will be back on Vancouver Island this weekend, kicking off their doubleheader on Friday (Feb. 14) against the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
