PRINCE GEORGE—Not all gifts are created equal. Flowers and chocolates are perfect things to give people on Valentine’s Day, but according to Positive Living North (PLN), an STI is not. That is why they’re recommending that everyone get tested.

“Especially if you think you are at higher risk,” says PLN’s Education Manager, vibusha Madanayake. “If you have multiple partners or if you have been diagnosed with any other STI’s before. It’s important to get tested.”

While, PLN is focused on HIV and AIDS, they say you should get tested for a wide variety of infections especially syphilis.

“Specifically Northern B.C. has had a huge rise when it comes to syphilis,” says Madanayake.

If you would like to learn more visit the Fire Pit Cultural Drop-in Centre on Thursday, February 13.

“We have a sexual health education booth. We are having this booth specifically because that is International Condom Day,” explains Madanayake. “We are talking about, sexual health. We do HIV bingo on that day, and we have a specially romantic movie show as well.”

PLN recommends getting tested once every six months. You can find the nearest sexual health clinic online at smartsexresource.com
