Ziemmer ties franchise record as Cougars beat WHL-best Silvertips

PRINCE GEORGE — A four goal second period powered the Prince George Cougars to a 5-1 win over the league-leading Everett Silvertips Saturday (Feb. 16) night at CN Centre.

The win helped the soon-to-be playoff bound Cougars split their weekend series against the already playoff-bound Silvertips, who picked up a 3-1 win Friday night.

Koehn Ziemmer made history as he scored the 120th goal of his WHL career, that moved him into a tie with Chase Witala for the all-time franchise record. Witala, a Prince George native, dressed in 302 games between 2011 and 2016, while Ziemmer has played in 229 games and counting.

The LA Kings prospect, who opened the scoring at 4:07 of the second period, also added two assists.

The Cats weren’t done as goals from Jett Lajoie, Borya Valis, and Riley Heidt had them up 4-0 after two periods of hockey. Heidt’s goal was his 111th as a Cougar, as he moved into a tie with Eric Hunter for third all-time in franchise history.

The Silvertips fought back in the third as they outshot the home team 14-3. Everett got on the board with a power-play goal from Carter Bear at 9:18, but Ben Riche responded at 13:04 with the pizza goal that restored a four goal cushion.

Not to be outdone, Valis also finished with a three point night for the Cougars, to sit just two away from the single-season points record by an American-born skater in Cougar history.

Between the pipes, it was goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen who once again stood on his head for the Cougars as he finished with 33 saves, for his league leading 27th win of the season. In the other crease, Jesse Sanche allowed five goals on 23 shots in a losing effort.

The Cougars remain in second place in the BC Division with 68 points from 53 games. They sit five points behind the Victoria Royals, who have 73 points from 55 games.

Next up for the Cougars is a road game in Langley on Family Day Monday (Feb. 17) against the Giants, before a pair of games against the Royals in Victoria Friday and Saturday.

Their next home game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25 against the Kelowna Rockets.
