Prince George Conservative MLAs blast ‘safe supply’ program

PRINCE GEORGE — Conservative MLAs in Prince George are taking aim at the provincial government’s ‘safe supply’ program following a drug bust outside a Prince George pharmacy last week.

In the bust, RCMP seized hundreds of pills and other suspected drugs, including fentanyl and methadone. Police say there were also 50 bags of “suspected pharmaceuticals” totalling more than 700 individual pills.

RCMP say the suspects have been released pending the outcome of the investigation.

A leaked briefing by a Ministry of Health investigative unit said a “significant portion” of opioids prescribed in the province are being diverted, and prescribed alternatives to street drugs are being trafficked across Canada and internationally.

In response, Prince George-North Cariboo Conservative MLA Sheldon Clare says the NDP’s drug policies “are fuelling crime, harming communities and weakening our hand in critical trade negotiations.”

Prince George-Valemount Conservative MLA Rosalyn Bird says it’s proof “we instead need a treatment-first approach” or a responsible Harm reduction approach “with a real path to recovery.”

Prince George-Mackenzie Conservative MLA Kiel Giddens adds that the NDP’s failure to control drug-related crime has Northern Health nurses sounding alarm bells about escalating violence in their workplace.

“Healthcare workers don’t feel safe, and that’s a direct result of the NDP’s soft-on-crime approach.”

The issue is sure to be raised as a new Legislative sessions starts on Tuesday.
