Tsay Keh Dene Nation secures $11 million federal grant
TSAY KEH DENE— Tsay Keh Dene Nation has been provided an 11 million dollar grant by the federal government to help improve the Nations community.
The Grant Agreement was signed on March 15, 2024, with the Nation outlining key investments in housing, strengthening governance, and creating new economic opportunities. Tsay Keh Dene Nation adds that this is a concrete step toward renewing their relationship with Canada, a relationship built on respect, cooperation and partnership.
“Tsay Keh Dene has struggled for decades with the shameful legacy of colonization in Canada in all of its forms,” says Chief Johnny Pierre of the Tsay Keh Dene Nation. “The agreement with Canada for granting funding is a significant step in empowering Tsay Keh Dene to gradually overcome some of the glaring socio-economic gaps and challenges faced by Tsay Keh Dene because of this legacy.”
Tsay Keh Dene’s traditional territory is located in the north-central region of British Columbia, with their main community residing in Finlay River Indian Reserve No. 6. In 1994, the nation began the process of signing a treaty with British Columbia and Tsay Keh Dene says that Canada choosing to invest directly into their territory lays the ground work for the long term goal of self-governance and a completed treaty.
