Innovative and eco-friendly: Rammed-Earth house turning heads in Prince George
PRINCE GEORGE – Three years ago, Prince George was the construction site of Northern BC’s first rammed-earth home. A local couple decided to step away from the conventional stick-frame approach and opted for a home that was comfortable and gentle on the environment. Their choice resulted in a house designed to withstand wildfires and extreme temperatures, allowing them to live with peace of mind.
Monica Mattfeld shares that one of the first things guests notice when they enter her home is its unique design. Over the past few years, they have constructed a rammed-earth residence using compacted soil shaped between plywood forms. They aimed to create a home with energy-efficient materials while being mindful of environmental impact. They used approximately 15 dump truck loads of earth to build the thick, two-foot exterior walls to achieve this.
After navigating numerous challenges and guiding builders on their vision for a home, the couple has finally found a place they can truly call their own.
