VICTORIA — The Prince George Cougars dropped back-to-back against the Victoria Royals to fall further back in the race for the B.C. Division title.

The Royals took Saturday’s rematch at the Save on Foods Memorial Centre 6-3, after they fell into a 4-0 hole early in the second period.

First period goals from Escalus Burlock, Keaton Verhoeff, and Kenta Isogai, and a second period marker from Markuk Loponen had the home team cruising, but the Cougars were able to claw back to within one.

Koehn Ziemmer began than comeback attempt with a power play marker at 15:42 of the second. It was a landmark goal as it means Ziemmer moved past Chase Witala to become the franchise leader in goals scored.

The LA Kings prospect scored his second of the night at 12:17 in the third period, before Villam Kmec made it a one goal game with less than five minutes to play, but there was no comeback to be had as Teydon Trembecky scored two empty netters for the Royals.

Cougars goaltender Joshua Ravensbergen was pulled at 14 minutes of action, as he allowed three goals on five shots. Cooper Michaluk was credited with the loss, even though he stopped 19 of 20 shots in 44:29 of relief work.

Jayden Kraus turned aside 23 of 26 for the Royals, who also clinched a playoff spot with the win.

With 68 points from 56 games, the Cougars are currently nine points behind Victoria for top spot in the BC Division, who have 77 points from 58 games.

They will attempt to right the ship against the lowly Kelowna Rockets with games at CN Centre this Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 25 and 26.
