PRINCE GEORGE— February 26, 2025 is Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day is an annual awareness campaign to recognize bullying and stand up against it.

The national movement in 2007 when a Nova Scotian student came to school in a pink shirt and was bullied. In response, some of his classmates wore pink shirts to showcase their support for the student and willingness to stand up against bullying.

According to a 2019 Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth, 7 in 10 children have experienced some form of bullying. However, bullying can happen at any age, including in the workplace, and those adults may feel less likely to speak out.

“With young kids and teenagers, it’s much easier for them to confide in their parents,” explains Grace Lekwauwa, an Administrative Assistant/Volunteer Coordinator at the Canadian Mental Health Association. “But for an adults I think there could be some shame and blaming that comes with it.”

Which is why it’s important to learn the skills needed to address bullying.

“Speaking up to someone who is actually doing the bullying. Going to the person and telling them that that what they’re doing is wrong,” says Lekwauwa. “Also, for the person who is being bullied, it’s okay to know that you’re not alone and that you don’t need to feel sad about the way that you’re being treated.”
