PRINCE GEORGE— Following the news of two-time Prince George Citizen of the year winner and Prince George Sports Hall of Fame member Dick Voneugen passing away on Monday, a couple of his friends have shared just how much of an impact he had on the community.

“It was his drive to do good things for the community and that he was always involved, whether he was an organizer or not. He would show up at events and blow his famous horn at the start. He was always into encouraging people to get out and do something active,” said President of the Outdoor Ice Oval Society, Kathy Lewis on Voneugen.

“He has untold, unbounded energy and enthusiasm, and when Dick decides to do something, it’s just full speed ahead. It’s 100% and there’s just no slowing him down. If he was going to get involved, things were going to get done and get done properly,” said fellow Prince George Sports Hall of famer, Brian Martinson.

Since Voneugen got involved in the sports scene, helping start the Prince George Roadrunners, he became a constant in numerous sporting events in the area. He took over the organizational responsibilities of the Prince George to Boston Marathon in 1984 and re-named it the Labour Day Classic, coordinated the first Terry Fox Run in Prince George, was involved in the construction of the Otway Nordic Centre, founded the Outdoor Ice Oval Committee in 1998 along with many other involvements in not just PG but Northern B.C.

“We’re going to miss him a lot. He was such a big part of this community in so many different ways, but his legacy continues on, and I hope a lot of people will become inspired to do volunteering as well, just like he did,” said Lewis.

Dick was inducted into the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 as a builder and administrator and a celebration of his life is being planned for April at the Outdoor Ice Oval.
