PRINCE GEORGE – Two researchers from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) have been selected to attend the “Science Meets Parliament – BC Program,” event in Victoria on April 28 and 29. Ecosystem Science and Management Assistant Professor Dr. Samuel Bartels and Chemistry Assistant Professor Dr. Kalindi Morgan will represent UNBC at the two-day event, which will feature extensive engagement with Members of the Legislative Assembly.

“It’s an opportunity for science academics to meet with parliamentarians, kind of establish some relationship and get their feet on the ground, build some good connections and take it from there,” Bartels said.

Bartels explained this event connects those that create policies with experts who can provide context, research, and statistics to inform policy decisions going forward. Bartels is one of many experts who will be there, and he will be bringing his knowledge of forestry with him.

“Instruments of policy and decision making goes beyond science, other factors come into play. Science, it’s only a component, but it brings us scientists to the table. At least our voice can be heard and factored in some of the decisions that they make,” Bartels said.

These policies have become increasingly important as the environment and forestry continues to be put under a spotlight due to ongoing climate change, forest fires, and the decline of the forestry industry in Northern B.C. While the event itself is only two days long, Bartels hopes the connections made will lead to years of productive discussions and positive policy decisions.

“This is to get our feet on the ground, get to know people, those connections, the parliamentarians offices, so if anything comes up, at least they know who to contact for some of the nitty gritties and the evidence,” he said.

This will be the second edition of this Science Meets Parliament Event, and a total of 27 researchers across the province will be attending.
