PRINCE GEORGE — The Prince George Cougars will have home ice in the first round of the WHL Playoffs, after a come-from-behind 4-2 win over Wenatchee Friday (March 14) night.

Koehn Ziemmer scored twice as the Cougars moved two points ahead of Victoria for top spot in the BC Division, though the Royals have played two fewer games. The Cougars have 84 points from 65 games, while the Royals have 82 points from 63 games.

The Cougars will finish as either the second or the fourth seed in the Western Conference, and will face either Portland, Vancouver, or Tri-City in the first round of the playoffs.

Matteo Danis opened the scoring in the first minute of action Friday, though the teams ended the first period at 1-1 after an Evan Friesen power play marker. Friesen then put the Wild, who are fighting for a playoff spot, ahead with the only goal of the second period.

But the Cougars steadied the ship as Ziemmer – the team’s all-time leading goal scorer – and Riley Heidt – the team’s all-time leader in points – combined for three unanswered goals and five points in the third period.

Ziemmer tied the game at 6:31, before Heidt’s power play game winner at 14:47. Ziemmer then iced the game at 18:45 as the Cougars improved to 22-4-3-2 at CN Centre.

Joshua Ravensbergen turned aside 25 of 27 shots to pick up the win, while Brendan Gee made 27 saves on 30 shots in a losing effort.

Friday night was also win number 400 in the WHL for Cougars General Manager and Head Coach Mark Lamb, the reigning WHL Coach of the Year.

The Cougars and Wild will rematch at CN Centre at 6:00 p.m. Saturday before closing out the regular season at home against Victoria on retro night March 21 and 22. The Royals will play in Vancouver Saturday, Kamloops Tuesday, and Kelowna Wednesday before heading to Prince George.
