PRINCE GEORGE — All public riding and equine events at the Prince George Agriplex will be suspended until at least April 14 due to a confirmed case of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EVH-1).

The highly contagious virus can potentially cause serious disease – including respiratory and neurological issues – in horses and other species.

EHV-1 has four forms that cause respiratory infection, neonatal infection, abortion, or neurological signs. According to the Centre for Equine Health at UC Davis, the last form can cause a condition known as Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), which attacks the spinal cord and brain and can be fatal.

In an update Saturday (March 15), the Prince George Horse Society said there was no change in the condition of the infected horse.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support expressed through the messages we have received. We deeply appreciate your thoughts and prayers,” the update said.

“To continue prioritizing the safety of our boarded horses, public riders and equine events; along with following recommendations from our local veterinarian, we are updating our facility closure policy to ensure we remain free from the virus.”

A Thursday (March 13) update from the Society said the affected horse had tested negative twice and was deemed okay to join the boarder herd on Friday, March 7. It also noted that it “acted swiftly” after the horse appeared unwell.

“In order to minimize misleading and incorrect information circulating, please understand that this is an extremely challenging time for us and our boarder herd here at the Agriplex,” the statement said.

“If you were in attendance at the Agriplex, please contact your vet for recommendations.”

According to a Facebook post by Green Mobile Veterinary Services, there are at least two cases of EHV-1 in Prince George.
