PRINCE GEORGE – The 49th annual Prince George Dance Festival is taking place this week at Vanier Hall, bringing dancers from all across northern B.C. to showcase their best moves.

“We have competitors here from all over northern B.C., as far away as Prince Rupert, Hazelton, Quesnel, Smithers, and everywhere in between, really. We have over 1300 entries competing in all sorts of dance genres,” said President of the Prince George Dance Festival Association Twylla Hamelin.

“The energy has been incredible. The energy year after year ever since coming back from Covid has just been building, so we’re thrilled to have the people here. We’re thrilled to have so many people, visitors, to Prince George, dancers from as young as five years old, all the way up to 70 years old,” she continued.

This festival has become a staple of the northern B.C. dance community, as Hamelin explained it’s not just a great opportunity to showcase your talents, but also an opportunity to connect with people and continue to learn and grow as a dancer.

“It’s such an important part of our young people’s education, and any opportunity they have, just like athletes have opportunities to train and go and tournaments around the city and compete against others, that’s exactly what this provides for our performing artists around northern B.C., an opportunity to see what other people are doing, learn from other people, get ideas, inspiration, build friendships, make connections, all of those things,” Hamelin said.

A lot of people who have been a part of the Prince George Dance Festival over the years have gone on to do professional dance and performing art careers around the world. It’s very exciting,” she continued.

The Festival will conclude on March 21 with a big gala dance at 7:00 p.m., and Hamelin says if you are interested you could buy a ticket at the door, although she notes that tickets are selling fast so if you’re interested you can purchase tickets online as well.
