Cariboo Cougars, Northern Capitals playing must-win BCEHL championship games Saturday

PRINCE GEORGE — The U18 AAA Cariboo Cougars were beaten 4-2 by the Okanagan Rockets in game one of the British Columbia Elite Hockey League (BCEHL) Final Friday (March 21) night at the Kin Centre.

Jaxon Larmand and Brett Peebles scored for the Cougars while Hayden Laing, Will Fuhrmann, Hudson Getzlaf, and Jake Torres did so for the Rockets.

Finn McKiernan picked up the win for Okanagan with 17 saves on 19 shots, while Jaxson Dikur was credited with the loss, allowing four goals on 35 shots.

The two teams will play game two of the series at the Kin Centre at 4:45 p.m. Saturday. If the Cougars are able to hand the Rockets their first loss of the playoffs, they’ll play a game three at 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Elsewhere, the Greater Vancouver Comets also drew first blood against the Northern Capitals in the final of the U18 AAA female championship in Coquitlam.

Rowan Brooke Hu scored the only goal 13:33 into the third period as the Comets beat the Capitals 1-0 in game one Friday night.

Alexandra Johnston posted a 20-shot shutout for the Comets while the Capitals’ Payton Planetta was credited with the loss for allowing one goal on 34 shots.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Planet Ice Coquitlam, and if needed, game three, will be played at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
