CHILLIWACK, B.C. — The Prince George Spruce Kings are gearing up for a must-win Sunday (March 23) afternoon matchup against the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL).

The Spruce Kings are in tough in their bid to make playoffs this season, as a loss in regulation Sunday would eliminate them from contention ahead of the final weekend of the regular season.

A win for the Kings would move them three points back of the Langley Rivermen for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Coastal Conference. The Spruce Kings currently have 46 points from 51 games, while Langley had 51 points from 52 games.

Saturday evening, the Spruce Kings fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Coastal Conference-leading Chilliwack, while the Rivermen beat the Spruce Grove Saints 3-1 on the road.

Mateo Mrsic and Adam Boatter for Chilliwack along with Owen Goodbrand for Prince George were the only skaters who scored in the five-round shootout at the Chilliwack Coliseum.

Prince George got on the board first just 4:53 into the game when Trent Ballentyne beat Chiefs goaltender Sebastian Gatto with a wrist shot. The Chiefs bounced back though Dru Mushumanski to make it 1-1 after one period.

Connor Dick made it 2-1 for the home team early in the second, but it was Prince George who led 3-2 after 40 minutes courtesy goals from Brock Cummings and Goodbrand. Brady Milburn then scored the only goal of the final period to force overtime.

Prince George goaltender Charles-Edward Gravel made 40 saves on 43 shots in regulation and overtime to pick up the loss. At the other end, Gatto finished with 29 saves on 32 shots.

The Spruce Kings will close out the BCHL season with a pair of games against the Powell River Kings at Kopar Memorial Arena this Saturday and Sunday (March 29 and 30). They’ll need to win, and the Rivermen to drop points in their weekend games against the Coquitlam Express and Chilliwack.
