“I usually tell people, if they have a balanced diet with lots of vegetables, they don’t need to take a multivitamin,” says Brett Chiasson, a pharmacist at Third Avenue Pharmacy. “However, certain populations definitely should take a multivitamin, like expectant mothers.”

Chaisson adds that seniors are also good candidates for multivitamins but that you should speak with a pharmacist first as they can interact with some medications.

“A very common one is Levothyroxine, which is used to treat like low thyroid hormone levels,” says Chaisson.

However, for pregnant people it is important to make sure you get all of your vitamins to ensure a healthy child. The main vitamins that you would be looking for are folic acid and iron. Folic acid prevents neural tube defects and iron will ensure the baby has an adequate blood supply. That being said, an easy way to get cheap way to get some iron into your diet is by switching over to a cast iron pan.
