Spruce Kings cherishing last week of regular season

Mar 27, 2025 | 4:43 PM

PRINCE GEORGE— The Spruce Kings currently sit three points back of the Rivermen for the final playoff spot in the Coastal Conference, but wouldn’t have the chance to play for the spot this weekend if it weren’t for three big performances last weekend.

They grabbed five of six points against three tough opponents in the Chilliwack Chiefs, Coquitlam Express and Surrey Eagles, including a 6-1 win over the Eagles on Sunday in a win or go home game.

“Those are some big games and we knew those were big games going into the weekend. I feel like we just took it with no pressure and figured whatever happens, happens and we liked the results,” said Spruce Kings Captain, Linden Makow.

“It’s probably the best hockey we played all year and the most fun hockey we played all year,” said Spruce Kings forward, Carter Hesselgrave.

Heading into the final weekend of the regular season, the Kings have already won six more games than last year despite an unprecedented amount of mid season roster turnover.

“All the boys love each other. We’re coming to work every day for each other, for our staff and for ourselves. Our mentality (is) to want to get ahead and push for that playoff spot because we know if we get in, there’s going to be teams worried to play us,” said Hesselgrave.

This weekend will be kicked off by the Kings Alumni Game at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday (Mar. 29), followed by the Spruce Kings against the Powell River Kings at 6 p.m.

It will mark the final regular season games of Linden Makow in a Spruce Kings uniform, after spending the past five seasons here and playing 198 games for PG (including playoffs).

“Just take it all in. The fans, the little kids that are waiting for fist pumps, everything, just got to take it in.,” said Makow.
