Cougars Fever is back in Prince George

PRINCE GEORGE— To open up the 2025 WHL Playoffs this past weekend, Cougars fans flooded the CN Centre for another edition of the Prince George Cougars and Portland Winterhawks rivalry.

“I’ve been a fan of junior hockey for a lot of years and I have never seen an arena or a town show up the way Prince George does,” said a Cougars season ticket holder ahead of game one.

After averaging over 4,000 fans a game in the regular season for the first time in two decades, 11,626 fans packed the CN Centre between games one and two of the first round match-up. A far cry from an organization that not long ago struggled to reach even half of their 6,000 seat capacity.

“I came when it was like the 600 fans (in attendance)… Then to see all the fans come back, it’s more and more exciting,” said a lifelong Cougars fan.

The incredible crowd support in game one, played a massive part in the Cats 7-6 comeback overtime win in the opener, and the fans were confident even before puck drop.

“We’re going to win. We’ll knock them out this year. They knocked us out last year. Now it’s revenge on them,” said a longtime Cougars supporter.

After dropping game two, 5-2, the fans will have to sit tight as the Cougars need at least one win on the road to make sure the series comes back for game six and game seven if it’s needed.
