Green Party candidate says formative years shaped her political beliefs

WILLIAMS LAKE — Jodie Capling is the Green Party of Canada candidate in the Cariboo-Prince George riding.

She grew up in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, west of Williams Lake, spending much of her time outdoors, enjoying all that nature has to offer. And she says those experiences helped lead her to run for the Green Party.

“Growing up out west, spending a lot of my formative years outside and enjoying beautiful B.C., really shaped my views and what’s important. So, the Green Party aligns with my interest in the environment and climate change.”

She felt it was important to put her name forward to ensure people had a chance to vote Green. So, why run now?

“I think in general, the Green Party is a voice of reason. So, when we’re looking at all of the challenges that we face, how can we move forward, taking into account many of my core values like sustainability, both environmentally but also societally. So, in our social systems – social justice, respect for diversity – ecologically and within our social setting and also participatory democracy.”

Capling has earned a master’s degree in resource management and worked in energy efficiency in the private sector for five years. She then made the decision, with her partner, to move back to the Cariboo to raise their children.

“I enjoy gardening and try to grow and preserve as much of our food as I can. I have been active in promoting action on climate change in many of the communities I’ve lived in over the years. This includes organizing public meetings and local events to support national and global movements and attending events by others.”

Election day is April 28.
