Bachrach ‘disappointed’ Conservative and Liberal opponents bailing on Terrace debate

SMITHERS — An all-candidates debate scheduled for Friday night in Terrace won’t have a full slate of candidates attending and the NDP candidate isn’t pleased.

NDP incumbent Taylor Bachrach says that his Conservative and Liberal opponents have declined at the last minute.

“I’m hearing from a lot of people in Terrace that they’re really frustrated. They look forward to seeing all the candidates, to get a feel for them in person and it’s a long tradition in Terrace. People here can’t remember a time we haven’t had an all-candidates debate.”

Bachrach says he’ll let voters come to their own conclusions regarding his opponents decisions.

“Where I come from, if you want the job, you’d better be willing to show up for the interview. I certainly am.”

Bachrach says he still plans on attending Friday’s all-candidates forum where the Christian Heritage Party is expected to participate.

“When I was first elected, I promised the people of this region I’d show up and work hard. I’m not about to stop now.”

CKPG reached out to the Ellis Ross Conservative campaign to find out why Ellis Ross won’t be attending the forum and received this statement in response:

“Ellis Ross will be door knocking in other communities, meeting voters throughout Skeena-Bulkley Valley and is unable to attend the Terrace All Candidates Forum. Skeena-Bulkley Valley covers approximately 325,000 square kilometres and Ellis is trying his best to be in as many communities as possible during the election campaign. He will be attending the Kitimat All Candidates Forum next week, which will be streamed on Facebook.”

CKPG also reached out to the Liberal campaign but has yet to hear back.
