PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George Cougars defenceman Carson Carels is in the mix to play for Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championships in Frisco and Allen, Texas.

The 16-year-old Carels is one of 19 players who were named to the pre-tournament camp roster Saturday (April 12) with the tournament set to get underway on April 23.

Should he make the final roster, it will be the second time that Carels will represent his country on the international stage. He previously suited up for Team Canada Red at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, where he won a silver medal.

Carels is coming off a standout rookie season where he tallied six goals and 35 points in 60 regular season games – good for sixth among all rookie WHL defencemen. He also added a goal and four points in the playoffs as the Cougars fell in seven games to the Portland Winterhawks.

A native of Cypress River, Manitoba, Carels was selected 16th overall by the Cougars in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft.

Canada is the defending U18 World Championship after they won gold in Finland last year. They’ll begin their title defence with games against Slovakia, Latvia, Finland, and Norway in the preliminary round of the 2025 tournament.

The 2025 IIHF U18 World Championships will wrap up with the medal games on May 3.
