One killed, another injured following gas plant fire north of Fort St John

FORT ST JOHN — A gas plant fire north of Fort St John Monday evening killed one person and injured another.

Tourmaline Oil Corp. said there was a fire at its Gundy c-60 gas plant site approximately 150 kilometres north of Fort St John Monday night at 5:45 p.m. local time.

The company confirmed that a contractor worker was fatally injured and another was treated for injuries in hospital.

In a statement, Tourmaline said it “is working with the appropriate authorities to ensure a full investigation is conducted into the cause of the incident. The plant is undamaged and remains shut in during this investigation. Tourmaline’s primary focus remains on the safety and well-being of onsite personnel and mitigating risk to the environment.”

RCMP add the investigation is in the very early stages and WorkSafeBC has also been called in. RCMP say while causal factors have yet to be confirmed, there is no evidence to suggest that there is any criminality involved.
