Wildfires lead to one RCMP detachment losing communications

TUMBLER RIDGE – A cluster of wildfires has led to the Tumbler Ridge RCMP losing key communications.

“The Tumbler Ridge fibre optic has been destroyed by fire and all telephone, cell phone, radio, and internet connections are unavailable,” an RCMP press release said.

The Prince George Fire Centre explained there is a cluster of five fires along Highway 52 near Dawson Creek, and crews are currently battling those fires.

“Two of them right now are being held while the other three are under control. We do have fire crew members on scene being assisted by helicopters. The resources are being shared amongst those three just because it is kind of very close together,” said Fire Information Officer Pedro Roldan-Delgado.

While the cause of the fire is still under investigation, Roldan-Delgado says it is suspected to be human caused, and he says it’s extremely important to stay fire smart. Even if there aren’t any current fire warnings, he says continuous drought conditions have made it very easy for even a small spark or ember to start a blaze.

“With these dry and windy conditions and with the hot days up ahead, we urge the public just to maybe not light the campfire or do an open burn because it doesn’t take much for an ember to travel or maybe cause a grass fire which can cause a forest fire,” Roldan-Delgado said.
