PRINCE GEORGE – The Canadian Union of Public Employees has released details of layoffs within operational staff at the College of New Caledonia.

In a statement, CUPE, Local 4951 President, Leanne Yearley writes:

“In recent months, the College has laid off more than 30 operational service staff. Management has attributed these layoffs to the impact of changes to the IRCC regulations; however, this comes on the heels of a restructuring of services where jobs were lost, and an already rising number of vacancies left unfilled over the last few years.

“These losses have significant impacts on the availability of frontline services—especially at smaller community campuses—as well as a reduction in programming, and an incredible loss of institutional knowledge.

We are regularly hearing from members that they do not feel like they are respected for the work they perform or their contributions to the campus community. Although these positions have been eliminated or left unfilled, the work and tasks have not. The shift of workload to remaining workers, who are increasingly precarious, is resulting in the loss of additional workers due to burnout and workload.”

CUPE 4951 members are valuable partners in learning and are integral to the services that students and the campus community rely on every day. “The loss of these workers leaves a huge hole in the fabric of our workplace and our union. It is a tragedy that members who have devoted decades to this institution have not been shown dignity through to the end of their service at CNC,” – Leanne Yearley, President of CUPE 4951.

The union says it continues to support members through this process, and remains its focus at this time.

These layoffs come on the heels of 16 layoff notices issued earlier this for faculty at the college.
