PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George is a city that boasts many fans of both the Vancouver Canucks and Edmonton Oilers. After a seven game battle in the second round of last year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs there is certainly no love lost between the two, but many Vancouver fans are putting their gloves away in support of bringing the cup home.

For Westwood Pub bartender and Oilers Fan Shannon Cardinal the increase in the number of fans is evident.

“Everyone wants to cheer on the Canadian team, and we’re the only one left in the playoffs. I feel like sometimes there is a lot more Canuck fans, but I feel like with the Canucks not making it to the playoffs, we get some bandwagon jumpers, so we do up the numbers for the Oilers fans here,” Cardinal said.

32 years and counting, that’s how long it’s been since a Canadian team last hoisted the Stanley Cup. Since that magical 1993 season when the Montreal Canadiens defeated a Wayne Gretzky-led Los Angeles Kings squad, no team from north of the border has won it all. Many local establishments like the Westwood Pub are benefitting from another deep run from Canada’s team as opposed to an All-American final.

“We do get a lot of people from out of town and stuff that come in to watch the games in the bigger city. We’re ready for it no matter what. We always have the sound blaring, have it on all TVs and we’re ready to go every single time. We have had more people coming in to watch the Oilers play than people paying attention to Florida and the Hurricanes. Our Oilers games are always through the roof and Canucks games are through the roof, so any Canadian team, everyone’s willing to support and we do fill a lot of seats with Canadian butts,” Cardinal said.

For Westwood Pub patron and Oiler fan Loren Tiljoe there is no place he would rather be than at his regular table among friends cheering on his team battle for the cup.

“Now that it’s the playoffs I’ll definitely show up for the games. So I think they deserve it this year because they’re a hard fought team and they have a big road to climb. So I think it’d be a pretty good series,” he said.

The Stanley Cup Finals begin on Wednesday, June 4, when the Oilers host the defending champions Florida Panthers for game one of the finals rematch of last year.
