What’s the most dangerous road in Prince George?

PRINCE GEORGE – ICBC has released its first of two scheduled updates this year detailing data from vehicle related crashes. The data shows that Highway 16 and Highway 97, in addition to Ferry Ave and Highway 16, are second and third in accidents. The most dangerous intersection in Prince George is once again at Domano Boulevard and Highway 16.

Data shows that there is an average of one crash per week with a total of 51 recorded in 2024. City councillor Brian Skakun says the solution starts with a connector between Ospika Boulevard and Marlow Road.

“I think it would be huge, people coming into town could cross over the highway and go down Ospika to get into town. But right now when you go into that area of town during busy times it’s just packed, and no wonder there’s more accidents because of the amount of vehicles.”

With the same intersections continuing to be problematic every year, Skakun says it’s clear something needs to be done to increase safety but that requires dollars and approval.

“We had some proposed rezoning come to council about two years ago, and one of the things that they identified in there was the need for the Ospika extension. You just can’t have it, because all the vehicles now that go down south all have to come back down South Ridge, and there’s no way for them to get back out. So it all funnels in to 16th and Domano and that’s challenging,” he said.

“Overpass or more upgrades to that intersection are the solution. I’m not sure how it would look but the province has to step up and help us. We need some of those provincial funds for these big projects because the local taxpayer can’t fund them all,” he continued

The next update is scheduled for this fall when 2024 data on fatalities and police-reported crashes will be published after a data reconciliation process between ICBC, BC Coroner’s Service, BC RCMP, and RoadSafetyBC.
