Prince George – Students at Springwood Elementary school were in a great mood Tuesday as they celebrated top spot in the 2025 Spirit of Healthy Kids program. With the win the school receives a $5000 grant to kickstart a new garden and greenhouse project. The program is a regional initiative designed to encourage students to lead healthy active lives and with over 3500 students competing from all over Northern British Columbia the initiative seems to be growing year by year.

“So we get updates from the school once they start participating in the program, and the kids are tasked with bringing back completed forms that outline their healthy activities, their healthy food choices and healthy lifestyle choices that they have made. This year we have huge uptake with the program with over 3500 students competing and we were just thrilled that that Springwood was the selected school. ” said Aimee Cassie, CEO of Spirit of the North.

Springwood Elementary was the grand prize winner but five other schools also took home $1000 for inspiring contributions to healthy living. The program which was created in 2016 has seen grade schools and students work together to make these programs a success with each school bringing something different to the table.

“They did a great job with their kids, and each school does something a little bit different. We had some schools do color walks, other schools focus on reading and then this school of course, focused on healthy activity and healthy lifestyle. I think it’s such a great program because it promotes healthy lifestyle and it promotes healthy choices. And that’s something that we’re really working towards with our youth. But then beyond that, the financial benefit of the program allows schools to do some really cool stuff that promotes that healthy lifestyle and healthy activities.” said Cassie.

The kids gathered in Springwood Elementary gym to celebrate the win together and share suggestions on how to spend there well earned grant. The ideas ranged from slip and slides to swimming pools with the highest cheers coming for a repaving of the blacktop beside the school with basketball nets. The Healthy Kids program is a partnership between Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, the Prince George Cougars, and Northern Health.
