PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George is launching a transit challenge this summer to encourage more people to take the bus.

“This summer transit challenge is kind of like the parks challenge that the City puts on, but it is trying to get people out on the bus, complete a form saying ‘I rode X route,’ draw a picture, tell us what you did, and where you went. From there you can enter it in and get into a draw,” explained the City’s Transit Planner Daniel Pearce.

“You can pick up the locations at multiple locations, including the Canfor Pool, the Aquatic Centre, City Hall. You can get involved on the city’s website, and ultimately, it’s just a fun exercise,” he continued.

Beyond the locations Pearce listed, you can find the form on the City’s website, and by filling out the form and submitting it, you can win prizes like:

  • Pool and YMCA passes
  • Transit tickets and UMO cards
  • Visa gift cards
  • Mr. PG shopping bags
  • Sonos Roam 2 smart speaker

“We’re hoping that a lot of students or families participate in it. Anybody that’s interested, if you haven’t taken transit, it’s a really neat way just to do it; this is really just trying to encourage people to get on the bus, explore it, utilize a service that we have within the City of Prince George, break down some barriers, and really, ultimately, just have a fun time with it,” Pearce said.

When explaining the motivation behind this event, Pearce said that environmental reasons were a factor, but it wasn’t the main driving force, as he explains it’s really about just getting more of a spotlight on the transit services the City provides.

“We want to encourage ridership to get people out of their vehicles. At different stages of your life, if you can’t drive or maybe you’re not old enough to driver or you’ve lost your license, transit is a very good alternative. Also during snow events and alternative weather events, transit is running almost every single day all the time,” Pearce said.

This program is made possible in part by a BC Healthy Communities Age-friendly Community grant. The BC Age-friendly Communities Program is delivered by BC Healthy Communities Society and is funded by the B.C. Ministry of Health.
