PRINCE GEORGE – Northern Health has confirmed the circulation of measles in a remote community in the province’s northeast, following multiple lab-confirmed cases in Wonowon, located about 89 kilometres northwest of Fort St. John. Initially, the first case was traced back to travel, but health officials now indicate that the virus has been active in the area since late May.

Residents of this community may have been exposed in several neighbouring areas, including Fort St. John. Notably, one possible exposure occurred at the Fort St. John hospital emergency room between midnight and 4 a.m. on June 2.

Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads through the air. It typically begins with initial symptoms, such as fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A rash usually appears a few days later, beginning on the face and gradually spreading down the body.
