Miracle Theatre celebrates incredible milestone, new fundraising record

PRINCE GEORGE – Miracle Theatre announced several huge milestones, as it celebrated a record breaking fundraising year of $209,433.40, on top of an all-time attendance record. This helped Miracle Theatre blow by the million dollar milestone, as it has now earned $1,064,713 since it began.

“When we started, there were three things that I had in mind. One was obviously financial, two was to do a good show, and three was to raise awareness of the cause. I think we met and exceeded on all those three levels,” said Miracle Theatre’s Producer Anne Laughlin.

All the funds raised this year went towards the creation of the Prince George Seniors’ Emergency Fund, which will help address the urgent issues many seniors face surrounding an increasing cost of living.

“There were two women that were living in their car, both seniors, and they did not want any of the grocery items that we’re able to offer, the nonperishable items. All they wanted was Ensure, because it’s all they had, they didn’t have any cooking facilities. So that was quite heartbreaking,” said Betty Bekkering, the Prince George Council of Seniors Vice-Chair, explaining some of the challenges she’s seen.

“It’s become so bad that now financial experts have a term for it, they call it longevity risk, and it’s the very elderly who cannot get to their end of the life without running out of money,” added Ted Price, Miracle Theatre’s Director.

Two shows were performed this year, which is uncommon for Miracle Theatre, although they have done it before. This played a large role in helping it hit a record fundraising number, and Price reflected on the incredible support and growth the Theatre has seen since it first began.

“When we started, our very first effort raised $42,000 for the Salvation Army Food Bank, and we were really pleased with that. It was a children’s program they had at the food bank, so that was great. But we didn’t ever anticipate that it would multiply and multiply in terms of how much we could raise, and we thought we might have a chance of breaking past a million (this year), but we certainly didn’t expect to break past it by $64,000,” Price said.

This effort will certainly go a long way towards supporting seniors during these times of crisis, which Bekkering says is important now more than ever.

“It’s very sad for these people to have contributed so much to society, and they’re at their last years of their life and they’re destitute, it’s not right,” she said.

The fund will be run by the Prince George Community Foundation, and hopes to continue receiving funding and donations well beyond Miracle Theatre’s incredible $200,000+ donation, to ensure that seniors will always have support when they need it.
