Students gathered at the College of New Caledonia Monday to celebrate Pride month with a Pride pop-up and color fest. The Safe with Me at CNC event featured tie-dye -t-shirts, button making, costumes, and high energy. The event aimed to celebrate LGBTQ with love, inclusion and community which provided an opportunity for people to get together and express their pride at CNC. Samantha Alleman the Vice President of the CNC Pride club says it’s important to celebrate all diversity.

“I think it is very important for us to celebrate who we are. I was raised in such a way that it was wrong to be this way but it’s not. It’s absolutely amazing. You see it all the time throughout nature and history. It’s just being proud of who you are and we need to be proud of who we are. We need to make sure we’re having a wonderful life, the life that we want.” said Alleman.

The LGBTQ community at CNC college had one goal while celebrating this event and that was to welcome everyone to a safe space on Campus. Pride student union representative Varun Kumar says the event should showcase that everyone is welcome.

“We believe it is very important for us to celebrate Pride Month on our campus so that we can embrace the LGBTQ community members on our campus and to show them them that yes we are with you, we support you and we can and we can make our campus a safe space for all the students at CNC.”

Those participating in the event feel that Pride month and it’s message of inclusivity
should be practiced all year round which is a sentiment echoed by CNC’ s Vice President of Indigenization Dr. Jessie King.

This is terribly important and pride month is something that should actually be all year round. It’s not just a day. It’s not just a month. It essentially comes down to kindness, belonging and inclusivity. It’s about really understanding the different walks of life that each person has the experience with, while honoring and making space for those different perspectives.” said King.

For those who missed the Pride at CNC event there will be another chance to show your support. The CNC will be participating in the Prince George Pride Parade for the first time on July 12th in addition to other events throughout June.
