Parking changes coming to downtown?

PRINCE GEORGE – It’s been a hot topic for years. Parking in the downtown. Add to that the area around the hospital.

“Every city in North America, after 1960, 1970, planned the city around the automobile,” says Mayor Simon Yu. “So the automobile, of course, gave us the freedom to go shopping. The arrival of a big box store here. That has changed all those things.”

A recent survey pointed to the unavailability of parking and the confusion around rules as to how long one can park in the downtown area, in particular.

“The parking system we have is not perfect,” says Eoin Foley. President of Downtown Prince George. “Sometimes people get confused about 3 hours and whether they’re allowed to stay. But definitely people are allowed to be downtown for more than 3 hours, and are allowed to be there all day. There are other pay parking options off street.”

And Foley has this insight.

“People will want to make sure that they can park really close to the store. Like 50 feet from their store. They’ll not be happy with it, but they’ll happily walk ten times the distance to go grab some milk at Superstore.”

Mayor Simon Yu feels the City needs to look at the bigger picture when it comes to the movement of people throughout the city.

“The solution to me is that we need to reexamine the public transit to downtown, as well as the how, and we need to encourage people to use the parking lots more.”

And Foley has these words of wisdom

“I remember when I first got involved in Downtown Prince George, one of the most controversial issues was parking. And I miss those days when parking was the most controversial issue.”

Study recommendations will be developed based on the observed parking demand, public and partner feedback, along with the best practices being adopted by similar communities. The study will suggest improvements to the current parking system in the following areas: Parking supply and design, Public safety, Accessibility, Payment and enforcement and Supporting infrastructure and maintenance.
