VANDERHOOF, B.C. — An online fundraiser has been launched to help support the family of a Vancouver man who was seriously injured in a crash in Vanderhoof earlier this month.

In a GoFundMe fundraiser, Kateryna Tyrina said the victim in the June 15 crash at Highway 16 and Pine Street was her husband, Max, adding the couple have a three-year old daughter, Myra.

“[Max] and our close friend were resting on the roadside during a trip in northern British Columbia when a Lincoln SUV struck them. Tragically, our friend was killed instantly,” Kateryna wrote. “Max survived but is now in the ICU at Vancouver General Hospital with severe brain trauma and multiple critical injuries.”

Kateryna said her husband has already undergone two major surgeries to reconstruct his pelvis and right shoulder with metal plates. She added while doctors are doing their best, the outcome remains uncertain.

“Likely, he will never return to the life he had. Max worked as a skilled DevOps engineer for over 15 years and was the sole provider for our family,” she said. “I’m now doing my best to care for our daughter and keep our life stable while supporting Max’s recovery.”

The fundraiser has already reached over 60 per cent of its $10,000 goal.

“Your support will help us cover our most urgent needs — especially housing costs — and give me time to focus on job searching and caring for Myra, while being present for Max in this incredibly fragile period, ” Kateryna added.

According to the RCMP, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash is cooperating with investigators. People who may have video or information about the crash are being asked to contact the BC Highway Patrol at 250-649-4004.
