City of Prince George to proclaim July 7 to 13 as Special Olympics Week as games approach

PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George will proclaim the week of July 7-13 as Special Olympics Week.

It comes as the city gears up to host the 2025 edition of the Special Olympics BC Summer Games July 10 to 12, which is expected to bring 1,200 athletes and about 400 staff, coaches, and supporters from 46 different communities to the area.

The week will begin with the raising of the Special Olympics Flag at Prince George City Hall. It’ll take place at 10:00 a.m. on Monday (July 7) and attendees are asked to wear black pants or shorts and the navy blue Special Olympics shirt.

On Wednesday (July 9) the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) will take place. It’ll begin at the Prince George Detachment around 10:00 a.m. and end around 12 noon at CN Centre.

“Cheer on law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes as they run the Flame of Hope across Prince George to raise awareness and funds for Special Olympics, and prepare to light the 2025 SOBC Games cauldron on July 10,” a statement from organizers said.

People who aren’t participating in the torch run can gather at the Special Olympics tent at CN Centre around 11:30 a.m. for a team building BBQ in the parking lot.

Opening ceremonies for the Special Olympics BC Summer Games will then take place the following day, July 10, at 7:30 p.m. at the CN Centre. Athletes will then compete in 10 different sports across Prince George on July 11 and 12.

Last month, Prince George was also shortlisted as a potential host venue for the 2030 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games. Should that bid be successful, around 1,700 athletes, coaches, and volunteers from across Canada will come to Prince George to participate in 10 sports over five days.
